Twisted Mix Tape Tuesday: Soul Meets Body

This week Jen over at her temporary home asked us for songs that are spiritual.  Cue my perplexed face.  Of course I made the mental leap from spiritual to religious.  And if there is one thing I’m not, it’s religious, well at least not in the organized sense.  Without delving deeply into my beliefs, let’s just say I’m not a fan of things that cause people to shun others based on their differences.  Life should be about inclusion, acceptance, and ideally, love.  So my songs today are ones that I find uplifting.  They make my spirit sing.  They make my heart feel light and happy.  They bridge that divide that sometimes exists between soul and body.

P.S. If I were to claim a religion, does worshiping the music count?

Soul Meets Body

Soul Meets Body- Death Cab for Cutie

Notable lyrics-

I want to live where soul meets body
And let the sun wrap its arms around me
And bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing
And feel, feel what its like to be new

Aqueous Transmission- Incubus

Beautiful.  This song has always made me smile!

Notable lyrics-

I’m floating down a river
Oars freed from their holes long ago
Lying face up on the floor
Of my vessel
I marvel at the stars
And feel my heart overflow

Birdhouse in Your Soul- They Might Be Giants

My friend Amy used to play this song for me.  Instant smiles.

Notable lyrics-

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch
Who watches over you
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
Not to put too fine a point on it
Say I’m the only bee in your bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul

When You Come Back Down- Nickel Creek

You want to see me cry, play this song.  It reminds me of my Dad.  The words are perfection.  I listened to it once on the way home from work in college at 3 AM and immediately packed a bag and made the 4.5 hour trip home, because I NEEDED to see my folks.

Notable lyrics-
You got to leave me now, you got to go alone
You got to chase a dream, one that’s all your own
Before it slips away
When you’re flyin’ high, take my heart along
I’ll be the harmony to every lonely song
That you learn to play

When you’re soarin’ through the air
I’ll be your solid ground
Take every chance you dare
I’ll still be there
When you come back down

When Creations Speaks Too Low- Prattle On, Rick

I could only find a cover video for this one.

Notable lyrics- Listen to the whole song.  It’s worth it.

And one that will make anyone smile……

Satisfy My Soul- Bob Marley

Notable lyrics-
(Satisfy my soul) You satisfy my soul (satisfy my soul);
You satisfy my soul (satisfy my soul).
Every little action (satisfy my soul),
There’s a reaction (satisfy my soul).
Oh, can’t you see what you’ve done for me, oh, yeah!
I am happy inside all – all of the time. Wo-oo-o-oo!

This is how my spirit feels when I hear these tunes…
