So this week we move out of my beloved 90s and into modern music. I thought I may be a bit bummed about this, but when I really took a moment to think about it, A LOT of great music and bands have emerged out of the last 13 years! The challenge, dear reader, is knowing where to look or in this instance, where not to look. The radio is all but useless when it comes to finding new music these days (unless you opt for XM and even then their selection is a bit repetitive). The standard Top 40 station is playing just that and it all really sucks. Call me a bit of a music snob, but I can’t stomach autotuned hiphop/pop/pseudorock when I know there are still great musicians making real music. Just take your music quest to the interwebz. There you’ll find an endless supply of talent just begging for a listen. Some of them are signed and waiting for that “big” mainstream hit. Some are dreaming of signing a record contract. And others (some of my very favorites) couldn’t give two shits about ever “working for the man” and are doing this music business thing all on their own. While we’re not far enough removed from the 00s to feel the warmth of nostalgia embrace us, there was/is a very strong identity to the era: The musician’s freedom. So log-in to your Spotify accounts, create a new station on Pandora, or click the play icon on the Youtube videos below. Because as much as some on you are bemoaning the music of the dreaded 00s, I’m here to tell you that there are some solid jams out there. This is only a very small taste.
Here are the rules-
The rules of Twisted MixTape are as such: Try and create a 5 song mix based on this week’s theme. As we move through the decades the assumption is you know about the music in the past, but not what is to come. Now keep in mind. Next week’s topic will cover music from the 10′s (?’s what the heck? are we going to call them the 10′s? Really?) at that time you can still include music from the Zilches. But for this week STAY OUT OF 2010 and beyond ond ond ond…… Anything prior to this “decade that will remain nameless” is fair game. If you want to create a theme within a theme, have at it! If you want to pretend you’re you and this is the 21st Century and you are making a mixtape for some person, dog or vegetable, then play on my friend!
Because music can be so therapeutic for many of us, I added a second theme to my mix this week. My mix is a journey from sorrow (loss, addiction, depression) to awaking (release, independence, joy). I also firmly cemented myself in the 00s.
The Funeral- Band of Horses 2006
“I’m coming up only to hold you under
I’m coming up only to show you wrong
And to know you is hard we wonder
To know you all wrong we were”
Sort Of- Silversun Pickups 2009
“What’s keeping my tongue tied?
I see when you roll your eyes
I swear any moment you will hear
My spirit explode”
Heartbeats- Jose’ Gonzalez 2006
“One night to be confused
One night to speed up truth
We had a promise paid
Four hands and then away
Both under influence
We had a divine sense
To know what to say
Mind is a razor blade”
Sleeping Lessons- The Shins 2007
“Because the old guards still defend (petty guards and shiny hands)
We got nothing left on which we depend,
So enlist every ounce of your bright blood,
And off with their heads,”
Also, the answer to the the question “will The Shins actually change your life” is yes. Yes, they will.
Thursday- Takenobu 2007
This one’s an instrumental that conjures up visions of awakening, soaring, and pure life. I adore Takenobu and given that he is based in Atlanta, I hope I’m lucky enough to see him play one day. If you truly love music and can appreciate raw talent, treat yourself and check out the rest of his work: http://www.takenobumusic.com/
I can’t leave without throwing out one of his other amazing songs. This one gives you a taste for his beautifully unique voice:
Stay positive & love your life!
Listening to: The Avett Brothers – Live And Die
Eating: Oven fried seitan, baked beans, potatoes.
Random fact: The cello is my favorite instrument.
